Wall Street rewarded speed and I was good at it. I was on a six figure salary before I had worked out what I actually wanted. What it never produced was anything I could point at. Positions open and close and at the end of the year there is a number. I left, went to a monastery in Thailand, and spent months on one meal a day with nothing to do but sit still. It was the first time in years I had been quiet enough to think properly.
Long Lane came out of that. I went from a trading floor in New York to a two hundred year old estate in West Sussex with no hospitality background, learning the business one decision at a time. Thirty rooms near Midhurst, built with Louie Blake, who I have known since we were children. It is built around longevity and prevention rather than indulgence.
